We’re All Grown Ups Now

On April 11, Maria Fahey was honored at the Alumni Council's 4th annual “We're All Grown Up Now” event moderated by Jodyann Blagrove '94, inviting a beloved and long-standing teacher to exchange personal stories with their now “grown-up” students. During the event, Maria shared some of her memories of Friends over the years and answered questions from the audience.

In particular, Maria shared three reasons why she decided to teach at Friends:

  1. The community at Friends is rooted in Quaker practices, which has impacted her students and her teaching style.

  2. The academic community at Friends, where there is a combination of rigor and playfulness which she has been able to thrive in.

  3. The teacher's union, which makes Friends different from most other independent schools.

Former Friends English teacher, Donovan Hohn shared about the evening: "Maria's leadership in the English department was important for those who were learning to practice the art of teaching and thinking of teaching as an art and have since gone on to teach at the university level."
