“David Freeman '57, passed away on December 25, 2023. At Friends, David was an exceptional athlete, on the varsity basketball team and captain of the soccer team, as well as serving on the staff of the Oblivion student newspaper. At Columbia University after Friends, he concentrated on soccer and majored in classics. For many years he coached children’s sports teams. Throughout high school, college and thereafter, David made his mark in music, after developing a fondness for the old time and bluegrass melodies of the Southern Mountains, which he explained arose from his ability to hear radio broadcasts from West Virginia at his family’s vacation home on Eastern Long Island. When at Friends and at college, he entertained his schoolmates and collaborated with fellow musicians, first on the guitar, then the banjo, then the mandolin.
David founded businesses that sold and produced records of old time and bluegrass music, at first from New York but then from Virginia. Dave and Andrea, whom he married in 1972, followed the music from New York to Floyd and Roanoke, VA, and then to Charlottesville, VA after David acquired Rebel Records in 1979. They moved to Chapel Hill, NC after their son Mark took over the leadership of Rebel Records and the businesses had already become an important force in the world of rural music. Dave is survived by Andrea of Chapel Hill and Mark of Charlottesville, by his son Kyle of Charlotte, NC, by his daughters, Whitney of Chapel Hill and Connie Lee Dawes of Austin, TX, by five grandchildren, and by his brother Stephen Freeman '60, of New York City.
We are also sad to report that Elizabeth Gummey Pemberton '57 passed away on March 7, 2024. An obituary from the Australian Academy of the Humanities can be found here. We hold her surviving family and friends in the light.
Class of 1959
As reported by Abigail Calkin '59:
“Last month I attended my 65th school reunion at Friends Seminary. Anthony (Tony) Antolini '59, Rick Casten '59, and Elizabeth Wolf '59 started in kindergarten and attended all grades. The rest of us came later, two as late as twelfth grade. In those years class size was limited to 25. I attended in second grade when my parents and I lived next door in the small Quaker residential hotel, The Penington. I returned for the four high school years.
While at the reunion we had the opportunity to visit a new room, the Skyspace, designed by Quaker artist, James Turrell. Inside the Skyspace the light and colors change and move. I’m a wordsmith, not a visual artist, so you need to search for James Turrell on the internet to learn more about him and his Skyspaces. I wish those of us at the reunion had had more time to sit in that space together.”

Class of 1984
As reported by Rebecca Moore '84
“The class of '84 turned out in full force for the reunion weekend. People traveled from as far as California, Florida, Alabama and Minnesota. We assembled in the gym on Friday for the alumni basketball game to cheer on the reds vs. the grays (and our own Taylor Burr '84). On Saturday, many of our classmates came to Friends for the day. That evening we were joined by several more members of the class, including some who left after middle school.
Over the weekend 40 classmates (including three of the class's four lifers) took part in some or all of the events: Neelam Al-Angurli '84, Michele Johnson '84, Peter Billow '84, Daniel Blum '84, Peter Bogardus '84, Taylor Burr '84, Suzanne Gotlieb Callejo '84, Nicholas Edelson '84, Sharifa El-Okdah '84, Marc Filerman '84, Katie Emerson Hoss '84, Deirdre Hannon Ragusa '84, Karen Field Hazin '84, Stasha Hughes '84, Stefan Kaluzny '84, Mark Koyama '84, Alex Levinsohn '84, Beth Lopez Roche '84, Juliet Mallory '84, Enid Newman Melville '84, Amanda Southon Miller '84, Lucas Miller '84, Rebecca Moore '84, Phil Newman '84, Adam Rabiner '84, Rina Rachman '84, Tracey Renner '84, Timshell Rivers '84, Tony Robinson '84, Peter Rogovin '84, Charles Rosenberg '84, Stephen Rosenthal '84, Matt Samton '84, Michael Schindlinger '84, Laurie Shapiro '84, Jon Sherman '84, Edward Smith '84, Kate Webber '84, Yi Zhu Wright '84 and Adrienne Berman Zabriskie '84.
On Saturday night, we held a moment of silence to remember two classmates, Mara Wechsler Modlin '84, Mary Ford '84, and Haille (Harriet) Nichol '84, who are no longer with us, except in memory. In the course of reaching out to people, we learned that Ashley Vernon '84 (who graduated a year early) is a surgeon in Boston at Harvard and Eric Trachtenberg '84 just moved to California. Classmates wanting to reconnect can find a group for our class on WhatsApp and on Facebook.”
Class of 1987
As reported by Ellen Deutsch Diamond '87
Ellen Deutsch Diamond '87 and Karen Deutsch Lustig '88, both of whom settled in Providence, RI years ago, opened Stewart House last year, in the historic Fox Point district. After decades in different careers, and with all three of their (Quaker-educated) kids out of college, they founded their home decor company with the goal of bringing European products to New England residents. The name comes from the apartment building they grew up in - so that they always have a bit of NYC with them. Drop by if you're passing through (97 Hope Street, Providence, RI) or find them on the web: stewarthousepvd.com
