Class of 1957

As reported by Susan Dry Boynton '57 & Merrill Cates '57
Many years ago prior to moving to Colorado, Susan Dry Boynton ’57 gave Merrill Cates ’57 a painting, entitled “Cicada Flight II” and Merrill recently donated the painting to Friends Seminary. Regarding the painting, Susan shares, “The collage started with a collagraph plate with natural botanical textures - arbor vitae predominantly. In addition, a layer of chine colle' bits of kitakata, Japanese rice paper, geometric shapes with some color are added. They are printed and glued onto the original collagraph at the same time hence "chine collé" glue and Japanese not Chinese paper (The term 'chine collé' refers to the process of gluing during printing, and kitakata is a type of Japanese, not Chinese, paper). Finally there are one or two cicada wings, dried and waterproofed and glued to the backer sheet. This painting was one of a series of small workups for a series of 80 prints I made for a print collection representing one print each from 20 - 40 printmakers, after an artists from New Jersey visit to printmakers in Berlin.”

I recently had an article published in Russian about a Conference years ago about women writers at NYU. A dear friend, who is or was the head of PEN in Moscow asked me to write this.
Not sure, given the climate, if PEN still exists in Russia. I am on two committees about patients at Bellevue, the country’s oldest public hospital.

Artwork from Amanda Church ’72 was featured earlier this month as part of an exhibit entitled, “intersection” at Steven Harvey Fine Arts Projects Gallery.

The Norwegian Critics’ Association and The Academy of Fine Art at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts are pleased to present a lecture by writer and curator Legacy Russell ’04. Taking her latest book Black Meme (Verso, 2024) as its point of departure, this lecture explores the commodification of Black identity from the early 1900s to the present, across diverse modes of expression – including early cinema, contemporary art, memes, and viral videos. Russell’s sophisticated analysis of historical and contemporary visual culture shows that Black people have continually been denied ownership of their own image. A central part of her critical project is to examine how today’s viral internet culture relates to subject formation and categories such as race, class, and gender. After the lecture, there will be a brief Q&A.
