Class of 1956

As reported by Gretchen “Gretty” Dumler '56

We are sad to report that Miriam Browne Poole '56 passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Miriam’s daughter, Carol, who described Miriam as “a cross between erma bombeck and Edgar Allen Poe”, has shared the following note, “Mom passed away after a brief illness on Saturday March 15th. I was going through her emails and trying to alert some of the people she may have known. Mom had many fun and wonderful stories from her time at Friends Seminary. Such a special place to her. Thank you all for staying in touch with her over the years.

If anyone has their yearbook handy, would you mind sending me Mom's senior photo and the words that were printed under her picture? I remember from years ago something about her seeing her name in lights. I would like to add it to her obituary if I could. She always laughed about her senior picture, as she made her own white collar just the night before.

If someone does have their yearbook handy and could send me her photo, please send it to

Thank you so much!

Blessings,

Carol Jones

Jed Davis '56 reports, “I continue to reside in the old farmhouse in central Maine that I bought 55 years ago. I had a big surprise two years ago when my older daughter, Larissa, and her husband, Jeff---after selling their house in SW Maine when their younger son left for college--asked if they could live with me during the good-weather months. During Maine's winter, they tow their trailer around America's southland. I also continue to practice law in Augusta, Maine's capital. My long-time love, Freda Bernotavicz, and I travel about 4 months/year. We are now spending 3 months in Stoupa, an idyllic village on the Aegean Sea in the Greek Peloponnese. Because of the increased use of zoom by Maine courts--which resulted from the pandemic--I am able to work, make court appearances, meet with clients, etc., from wherever we may be. We had a wonderful week-long visit from our Friends classmate, Peggy Zavattini, who lives in Geneva, Switzerland. I feel so grateful for so many things and people, including the five years I spent at Friends.
