This summer, I had the opportunity and pleasure to join Whitewall Art magazine as an editorial intern. Whitewall is an independent art and lifestyle magazine with team members around the world that focuses primarily on contemporary international art, design, fashion, and lifestyle, providing me with an in-depth view of these worlds from a journalistic perspective. I worked directly with the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Katy Donoghue, with my daily assignments, receiving personal edits and guidance throughout the editorial process.
With the support of Barnard College’s career office internship program, I was able to accept the position for my summer internship and attend frequent career training programs throughout the twelve weeks–from networking workshops to peer advising. At Whitewall, my experience included writing 39 articles under my personal byline through communicating with brand, gallery, and artist press teams and attending local events in New York. In addition to my personal article contributions, I worked alongside the small editorial team to aid with the weekly lineup, through fact-checking other pieces and organizing press releases and images for our coverage.
Writing for Whitewall brought me to a range of inspiring events, from gallery and museum shows to celebrated brands’ press previews. One highlight of the summer was covering American artist Joel Mesler’s Rockefeller Center public art installation, entitled “Pool Party.” Preparation for my article included meeting the artist and a member of his public relations team at the exhibition opening, which took over the entirety of the Rockefeller Center’s iconic skating rink space.
Another piece focused on Korean artist Suki Kyeongkang’s latest solo at Tina Kim Gallery, for which I got a personal tour of the gallery. The article sent me into a deep dive into the artist’s rich portfolio and her captivating blend of traditional and contemporary techniques. Every day with Whitewall, I learned something new about the dynamic worlds of art, fashion, and design, and I am excited to keep exploring them during my second year at Barnard and beyond.
